Celebrating Diwali

Celebrated around the world, Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Meaning “row of lights”, the festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness.

In Woolwich, the Royal Borough of Greenwich is holding Autumn Lates (26 October to 5 November) - eleven days of activity celebrating autumn and light festivals from across the world, including Harvest, Moon Festival, Diwali, Hannukah and Bonfire Night. Visit General Gordon Square for street food, crafts and produce traders, free fun activities for children, fun fair rides and live entertainment for all ages. From dusk, a spectacular light tunnel will perfectly frame your autumnal selfies and trees will be illuminated with colourful, interactive lighting. Free story times, arts and crafts and mascot meets will keep little ones entertained, while the fun will continue after dark with music and dance performances.

The National Maritime Museum on Saturday 11 November will be hosting a full day of family-friendly events, featuring free live performances, workshops, talks, a lantern parade and more. The events include live performances from Sari Party with DJ Tara Kumar, Rajasthani performance and workshop with Akademi, and Story Hour Puppet Theatre. Workshops include Diwali Diyas where you can try your hand at making your very own Diwali lantern, Rajasthani Workshop with Akademie to have a go at the Rajasthani folk dance yourself! Future Drape Workshops to learn the technique of modern sari draping, The Alchemy of Identity to create your own personal 'identity flag' reflecting how all your cultural influences come together and Beginners Yoga which is open to all levels incorporating movement, meditation and breathwork. 

Greenwich Peninsula have also curated a dynamic day of activities on 11 November for all ages to enjoy. Immerse yourself in South Asian culture with Bollywood Dance, Henna Tattoos, Diwali Lantern making and lantern procession and an opportunity to meet artist MURUGIAH to uncover the story behind his artistry and creative journey.
