Food and Drink

Woolwich has got some outstanding places to eat and is beginning to develop and even greater variety of restaurants and cafes.

Recent arrivals include Con Gusto, a bijou Italian restaurant in the Royal Arsenal. Housed in a grade II listed former guardhouse, built in 1815 the restaurant serves excellent modern Italian food cooked in an open kitchen.

Blue Nile Cafe features regularly in top London restaurant lists with its exciting and definitely unique blend of Italian and Eritrean dishes.

They include meat stews infused with cardamom and cinnamon and cooked in ‘tesmi’, a warm and comforting spiced butter and cardamom flavoured bread called ‘himbasha’.

Get a good foundation for the day with breakfast at Cornerstone Cafe where there’s a huge range of options for that all important first meal of the day.

Try the Black pudding breakfast with Cannellini beans, onions and chorizo, sautéed potatoes, tomato and two fried eggs or Sweetcorn fritters with roasted tomatoes and spinach.

There’s more great food at eateries including Koffees and Kreme, Plumstead Pantry, Viet Baguette, Woolwich Coffee House and Art Fix.

Pubs in Woolwich

You can find an excellent collection of individually-minded pubs in Woolwich, with craft beer celebrated in most licensed premises.

The Taproom, in the Royal Arsenal, is part of Hop Stuff Brewery and serves a beautiful array of beers and amazing sourdough pizzas. Beers include a Berliner Weisse style beer, Sour Ale, beer barrel aged in burgundy pinot noir barrels and Dark sour brewed with four malts and a Belgian yeast strain!

The Woolwich Equitable is a former Building Society turned pub in General Gordon Square, right at the heart of Woolwich life. The interior is an exciting mix of grand marble, vintage décor and quirky design features inspired by the building’s original function. There’s plenty of craft beer in here as well and an entertaining programme of events, music and quizzes. You’re very unlikely to be bored!

Try The Dial Arch, back in the Royal Arsenal for a comfortable and elegant haven, set in beautiful surroundings. There’s an open fire and a sun terrace, so you’re pretty well looked after whatever the weather. Thirsty yet?
