The river Thames has always played an important part in Woolwich life.
In the past, goods and services have been landed at Woolwich for the Royal Arsenal in particular. Raw materials and explosives came ashore from relieved ship’s captains, while more benign cargoes could be disembarked at less hazardous docks and jetties.
Nowadays a regular passenger service with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers takes passengers up the river to Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower, Embankment and Westminster piers for work and pleasure.
The Woolwich Ferry also takes passengers and vehicles back and forth across the river, as it has for nearly 130 years.
The river, as a route for commuters and tourists has grown increasingly influential over the past few years and is likely to become even more integral as the development of the Woolwich Cultural district and Royal Arsenal Riverside progresses.
