Whether it’s “for the Gram”, your blog, or you’ve gone totally retro this year and started printing photos and popping them in photo albums, Greenwich is the place to get the best holiday season shots in London.
With twinkly Christmas lights, colourfully decorated Christmas trees, beautiful historic buildings, and iconic views – here are the most Instagrammable spots in Greenwich.
1. Enter a Snow Globe on top of The O2
Climb the roof of The O2 on a guided tour with Up at The O2 this winter, to enter a one-of-a-kind rooftop Snow Globe complete with falling snow (inside), dazzling views of the city (outside) and a fur-covered Santa seat for the perfect winter shot.
2. See an out-of-this-world installation in the Painted Hall
Check out Social Media Mondays when limited tickets for the incredible, otherworldly Mars installation mean you have more space to capture your own images of this spellbinding artwork.
3. Greenwich Market’s dazzling Christmas lights
Start your Greenwich Market Christmas tour at Turnpin Lane – a narrow cobbled street draped in fairy lights. Then it's inside to see the market’s historic glass roof aglow with lights. You’ll also want to get a classic mulled wine shot, plus delectable food including popular Christmas-themed desserts.
4. The Royal Borough’s Christmas tree roll call
No visitor to Greenwich can miss the Cutty Sark but did you know that after the sun sets, you’ll also see its historic rigging lit-up like a Christmas tree this winter. In Woolwich, there’s a handsomely decorated tree in the town centre, and another at Royal Arsenal. The town centre in Eltham has another traditional tree charming shoppers, while Greenwich Peninsula is drawing a crowd with its tree adorned with red baubles. Read all about Greenwich's epic Christmas lights.
5. Catch Santa in a Gingerbread Grotto
Looking for a new take on that classic Santa photo? Head to Woolwich Works where Santa will be meeting local families in a Gingerbread Grotto, and you’ll see Santa in a lollipop-lined garden with an icing-tiled roof.
6. An historic riverside pub that goes all out for Christmas
The Trafalgar Tavern gets its Christmas decorations up in November, because why not? See garland-lined ceilings, tuck into a hearty meal by an open fire, then check out the outdoor flags and festoon lighting for a joyful late-night Christmasy shot.
7. Bringing glam to Outlet Shopping at The O2
Stop to take a selfie – or three – as you enter Outlet Shopping at The O2. Climb the showstopping golden staircase before striking a pose beneath the disco ball ceiling decorations at the top! If you time your shopping extravaganza well, you might catch a festive choir here too. While the brightly lit designer stores make for excellent shopping shots – did someone say Le Creuset?
8. Winter magic at Greenwich Peninsula
Whether it’s the very pretty 10-metre tall Christmas tree, the whimsical Winter Carousel, or European-style Chrismtas market stalls, Greenwich Peninsula is full of photo opportunities – as well as lashings of festive vibes this season, all at Winter at Greenwich Peninsula.
9. Not just a filming location: the Old Royal Naval College
You’ll recognise it from many a major film, but at Christmas, the Old Royal Naval College is also home to special storytelling sessions with Father Christmas. Get your own “set-jetter” shot while waiting for your chance to hear from Santa and his granddaughter before snapping a festive selfie together.
10. Fly over London in a Christmas sleigh themed Cable Car
The Santa’s Grotto Experience at the IFS Cloud Cable Car may be for kids, but the views of London at Christmas – made more special if you can catch one of the sleigh themed capsules in it – are for everyone. Top tip: book your ride for golden hour!
11. Take in the city at Christmas from the Thames
You’ll be able to take uninterrupted photos of London’s famous landmarks from the water – all at their Christmassy best – on a City Cruises Christmas cruise this holiday season. And enjoy a Christmas party while you’re at it.
12. Magical light installations at Sparkle in the Park
Until 1 December, snap stunning light installations at Sparkle in the Park, the free Christmas light trail at Charlton Park, House & Gardens. Then pop into a cosy Winter Tavern for a warm drink and more opportunities to capture the Christmas spirit.
